Election Protection

Every eligible Michigander deserves an equal opportunity to make their voice heard at the ballot box. Our Democracy For All team works year-round to protect and expand access to voting by helping ensure elections are accessible, educating voters about their rights, and supporting efforts that make it easier to participate in our democracy, not harder.

We also work to expose and oppose attempts to restrict voting rights or create unnecessary barriers to the ballot box. By empowering voters, advocating for fair elections, and working alongside partners across the state, we're helping build a stronger, more inclusive democracy where every voice is heard.

If you observe or experience any threats to your right to vote, barriers to the ballot box, or instances of voter intimidation, call the nonpartisan Election Protection hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683!

Threats to democracy & our freedom to vote

Coordinated efforts at the federal and state levels would make it harder for eligible Americans to vote. The federal SAVE Act and Michigan House Bill 4765 would require voters to provide documents such as a passport or birth certificate to register or update their voter registration, even though it is already illegal for non-citizens to vote under federal law.

If enacted, these measures could create new barriers for millions of eligible voters. Nearly half of Americans do not have a passport, many married women and others have birth certificates that no longer match their legal names, and obtaining replacement documents can be costly. The bills could also make voter registration and voting by mail more difficult, increase the risk of eligible voters being removed from voter rolls, create new burdens for election officials, and require more sharing of voters' personal information.
